Mural Unveiled at Aloha Tower Marketplace | Nov. 6, 2023

HPU welcomed its first mural at Aloha Tower Marketplace last week by renowned artist Kai‘ili Kaulukukui. “The Reef at Sharky’s Cove” took six days to complete and pays tribute to the Makapu‘u campus and Hawai'i’s ocean ecosystem. "I feel deeply honored that I was invited to create this piece," Kaulukukui shared with the crowd at the unveiling. He offered students and staff the opportunity to help with the painting efforts during a community paint event, which he hopes will help students feel more connected to the piece. "If [students] feel included in the process, they take ownership of the work. They'll come up and be like 'This is my mural,' which it is because they painted on it," he explained. Kahu Kordell Kekoa blessed the mural with the help of the HPU 'ohana, including SGA President Andrea Maminta, President John Gotanda, and Provost Jennifer Walsh. Sharky’s Cove, located on the 2nd-floor lanai at ATM, is open to all members of the HPU ‘ohana. Watch the video here.

Oh hello there, I’m Sabrina, the library director here at HPU. Did you know that the libraries are so much more than just books? 

Yeah, we have a *bleep* ton of those too, but did you know we also have:

• High-powered computers for working on those creative projects

• Private rooms you can reserve for up to two hours each day

• Collaborative areas

• Quiet areas

• And areas where you can just chill

The library is also a safe space, literally. You have to scan your ID card to get into both the Waterfront Library and Learning Commons.

It’s a judgment-free zone, where you’re free to be yourself, whatever that looks like.

Did you know we have research librarians, like Shane? They can teach you how to do research in databases full of peer-reviewed academic articles, so you can crush your next research paper.

And did you know that students who use the library tend to have higher GPAs and graduation rates? And you can fact-check that, at the library.

You don’t have to be in the library to take advantage of it: 

• Conduct research anywhere you have internet access

• Can’t find an article you want? Request it through inter-library loan

• Use the citation generator

• And chat with a librarian, 24/7

And in addition to all those online resources, we also have, you know, actual books. Lots of books. We even have student book clubs, so check them out.
